Highlights

In the second weekend of September in even-numbered years, this square hosts a game of chess played by living characters. The event recalls the stories of Lionora, daughter of Castellano, and her two young suitors.

Those who love mediaeval atmospheres and historical re-enactments will no doubt be fascinated by this special and exciting event. The town lying at the foot of the Venetian hills also offers guests other great opportunities: the area is especially known for its natural beauty typical of the foothill regions.

Marostica also preserves a rich historical heritage: in fact in the fourteenth century the city passed under the control of the Scaliger (Della Scala) family, thus becoming a "walled city".

As well as admiring the fortifications and towers, visitors will be captivated by the magnitude of the two castles connected by a long wall: the Upper Castle dominating the city from the top of the hill, and the Lower Castle located on a plain. From Marostica you can reach Bassano del Grappa, the city with a famous bridge over the Brenta River which is also mentioned in traditional Alpine songs.

Built in the second half of the sixteenth century according to a design by Palladio, this covered bridge was damaged by bombing and later restored. Today, the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) (or Ponte degli Alpini - Alpine Bridge) is one of the city's main attractions.

Bassano is also known for its grappa: thus, the itinerary must include a stop at the oldest distillery, where you can taste a small glass of brandy. From the province of Vicenza you can also reach Asolo in Treviso, listed amongst the most beautiful villages in Italy.

As an ancient Renaissance court and refuge of poets and artists, Asolo is still considered an oasis of tranquillity. The symbol of this town located between the Veneto plain and the Bellunes Alps is its mediaeval fortress; don't miss a visit to the Castle of Caterina Cornaro, where the Eleonora Duse Theatre is currently located.

Schedule:

  • Departure from Piazzale Roma - EAST side
  • Arrival at the town of Marostica in the foothills, which are at once both pleasant and green and have always aroused an irresistible allure thanks to the richness of their natural beauty and an original historical and glorious past. Visit to the mediaeval town which took on its current appearance of a "walled city" in 1312 with the Scaliger family, Lords of Verona. It is fortified in a powerful, functional manner and ordered with infrastructures such as the Lower Castle, known as Castello Da Basso, the Upper Castle, the fortified walls and towers
  • The tour will take you to Bassano, where you will cross the famous bridge over the Brenta River known as Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) or Ponte degli Alpini (Alpine Bridge), which has undergone restorations and reconstructions since its creation, one of which was designed by Andrea Palladio in 1569. A visit to this city famous for its ceramics and grappa production includes a grappa tasting session in its oldest distillery
  • Arrival in Asolo, a hill town of immeasurable charm. From the end of the 14th century the town acquired enormous grandeur under Venetian rule and in 1489, Venice granted the fiefdom of Asolo to Caterina Cornaro, the former queen of Cyprus. She established a magnificent Renaissance court of artists, writers and poets, and left an indelible imprint on the art and layout of the town. For this reason, Asolo has always been loved as a perfect retreat for the body and soul for many famous people who, across the ages, have loved the town and lived there, including the great actress Eleonora Duse
